Just Champion: Glenn Irwin

Profile on a very good up
and coming short circuit
motorbike racer, Glenn Irwin
is his name. He got the bug for
motorbike racing when he first
rode a motocross bike at 3
years old. He got into bikes
through his dad who has the
record for the most ever wins
in Ireland in short circuit
racing with over 500.  He
raced motocross until he was
17 and made his short circuit
debut in July 2007. He then
switched to short circuit
racing. Many people asked
why he hadn’t followed in
dads footsteps up to this point
as he was quite an established
circuit racer, that is when he
changed over to the circuits
and the rest is history.
Glenn attended Larne
Grammar School and then
went on to Lisburn Tech until
2009. He has qualifications to
level 2 in refrigeration. When
asked about his favourite
football team he tells me it is
Man United (but we won’t hold
that against him), and his
favourite player is Lionel Messi,
(that’s because he never saw the
greatest of them all, George
Best)
When asked about his
favourite food he says he likes
beef stroganoff coupled with a
fruit smoothie.  “My racing team
is MWR/Gearlink Kawasaki
and the leathers I wear when
racing are Gimoto, my number
on the bike is #2 in the British
Superstock 600 Championship
2011,” says Glen.

He has a website

 www.glennirwinracing.co.uk
and can also be found on
Facebook under his own name.
“I like to wind down spending
time with people away from the
racing just to relax, I keep
myself fit with a lot of training
and spend time with the family.
I love to win but that is not the
be all and end all as long as
everyone gets home safe and
enjoys this great sport of ours. I
would like to thank all my race
team and my sponsors for
without them you could not
operate as it all comes down to
team work.
I hate it when you are at your
best only to have a mechanical
failure or do something stupid
and ride bad, so I guess I’m not
a very good loser.”
Glenn’s achievements to date
are as follows:- 2008 - Irish 125
Clubmans Champion, Gary
Morrow under 21 award, 2009
- Irish & Ulster Supersport Cup
Champion, Irish & Ulster
Supersport Champion, 2010 -
Irish & Ulster Supersport
Champion, Kildare Supersport
Champion,  Bertie Mann Award
for outstanding achievement
from under 21 in 2 wheel sport.
Multiple lap records.
“My targets for next season -
To win the British Superstock
600 title with MWR/Gearlink
Kawasaki. To win the Sunflower
600 races which is held at
Bishopscourt at the end of a
very long season.”
Glenn, I, on behalf of
Shankill Mirror wish you and
your team all the best for 2011
and look forward to you
winning the Sunflower, a big
thank you for this interview
